How many times have we all said, “I don’t have time to practice?” Probably more times than we’d like to admit. Here’s a simple way to re-calibrate your thinking and time management for maximum results.
If you only have five minutes, then practice one thing for five minutes! This simple concept has truly changed the way I think about progress.
The key is selcting something specific to work on, perhaps a technical weakness or refined musical concept. For example, if you play a buzz roll for 5 minutes straight, it will be smoother, softer, easier to play, and more within your musical vocabulary the next time you play. That’s progress!
The beauty of this way of thinking is that it makes it so much easier to commit to practicing once you realize that you can improve in such a small amount of time. Often those five minutes you thought you didn’t have will turn in to ten or fifteen. Just take out your pad or sit down at those drums and get to work! The clock is ticking away five minutes at a time.
